Café Van Gogh, Brixton Road

Café Van Gogh
88 Brixton Rd, London SW9 6BE

Everyone needs a reason to get out of bed for work in the morning, and Cafe Van Gogh is mine. I am very lucky only have to commute to town on a Wednesday, and even luckier that my office is within drooling distance from this fabulous vegan/vegetarian cafe.

I used to live in Camberwell and for years meant to stop by – I like to think I am making up for it now, as this is my firm favourite lunch spot each mid-week tummy growl.

*Post update 29th June 2017* Amazing news – Cafe Van Gogh is now 100% vegan – check out their new website for their beautiful summer menu.

Café Van Gogh has two charming outside seating areas – one at the back, away from the bustling Brixton Road – and it is dog friendly which is always a plus when you’ve been puffing your pooch out in nearby Kennington Park. The staff and Steve (who runs the cafe) are chilled, friendly and chatty, adding to the very pleasant natural vibes that greet you in this utterly charming and relaxed venue.

The main menu provides a solid choice for veggies and vegans, as does the specials board that you can often get a sneak preview of on the café’s Facebook and Twitter feeds. The owners rightly boast of their salad options which are flavourful, mega-healthy and fill you up with goodness. Salads are accompanied by a variety of choices such as African stew, wild garlic penne and mixed meze selections to name a few. All home-made and all exceptional.IMG_5634

I have yet to try the weekend brunch menus, but going by the café’s photos and menu it won’t be long before I bundle the family (dog included) in the car for a weekend visit. It will be open for evening meals in the near future and the owners are currently considering a licence to serve alcohol or at least allow customers to bring their own bottle. There is free wifi to encourage the steady flow of freelancers and the cafe proudly advertises itself as a social enterprise supporting the local community – another reason to love this little gem.

You don’t have to be vegan or veggie to eat here; all are very welcome, and you certainly won’t feel you are missing out on anything. Quite the opposite, especially if they have their vegan chocolate cake on offer.

They serve good strong coffee too, served at the correct temperature (no third-degree-tongue burns here thankfully) with a good selection of dairy-free milks for vegans. Roll on Wednesday … now my favourite day of the week.
